Despite its name, this plant is not a true palm but, in fact, a member of the Asparagaceae family. It is native to Mexico, so is used to dry and barren landscapes, and has the ability to hold water within its trunk. Its long and floppy leaves, that grow from the top of the trunk, resemble a ponytail.
Another common name for this plant is Elephant's Foot because its lower trunk is said to look like just like the foot of the grey mammal.
This is a very forgiving plant, and can even go two to three weeks without water - not that we are suggesting you purposely neglect your Ponytail Palm! Remember, it has a natural dormant period in November and December so will not need as much, if any, watering and feeding.
