The Sago Palm is native to southern Japan. The Sago Palm is a beautiful ornamental plant with bright green feathery leaves (with spiky tips) that spread out around a central cone. The Sago Palm is an extremely ancient species that has been around since prehistoric times and has even been called a ‘living fossil’.
Light conditions: indirect, bright light. Direct sun can scorch the leaves.
Neediness: will require frequent misting to replicate its natural tropical environment. Dust occasionally to clear the pores and help the plant breathe.
Watering: aim to keep the soil moist but not soggy. This plant prefers being allowed to dry out slightly between watering so only water once the top inch of soil has dried out. Avoid overwatering as the Sago doesn’t like soggy roots.
Ideal location: bathrooms, kitchens
Rate of growth: slow growing, in their native tropical environment single fronds can reach 1m but growth is much slower indoors.
Temperature: keep at normal room temperature, prefers to be kept warm so avoid draughts and do not let temperature drop below 10c.
Pets: this plant is toxic to cats and dogs. See our range of pet friendly plants if your pet is prone to nibbling.
