'Atomic Deep Purple' produces dense, velvety plumes in a deep, almost blackcurrant purple that holds its colour right through from midsummer to autumn. The drama is considerable. The effort required is not.

Native to tropical Africa and Asia, celosia is frost-tender and treated as a summer annual in the UK. Plant it out after all risk of frost has passed - usually late May to early June - in a warm, sheltered spot with plenty of sun. It won't survive winter outside, but for its season it's one of the most eye-catching plants you can put in a pot or border.

The name celosia comes from the Greek word kelos, meaning ""burned"" or ""flame."" The plumes also dry beautifully and hold their colour for months - worth cutting a few stems for indoors.

Grow in full sun in moist, well-drained soil or compost. Keep the compost consistently moist but never waterlogged - overwatering is the most common cause of problems. Feed every couple of weeks with a liquid fertiliser while in flower. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more. Discard once flowering has finished and the foliage dies back.

Decorative pot not included.
