With sweet-smelling, star-shaped flowers in a gorgeous, bright indigo colour, it's hard to resist this charming shrub. It is occasionally referred to as 'Old Man's Beard' due to the silver, fluffy seed heads that follow after flowering, resembling, as you've guessed, an old man's beard! The Clematis will attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden.
Clematis is a Greek phrase, meaning 'brush wood', as a reference to the plant's branches.
This shrub needs full sun to flower well, and you can expect to see blooms between the months of May and October. It will also appreciate well-drained soil.

Jo's Top Tip
The Clematis is known to spread over low shrubs, so if you'd rather a neater look, they can be contained with a support such as a trellis. The plant will then instead grow on this support.
