It's the most vigorous of all the climbing clematis and in late spring it does something spectacular - every stem disappears under a mass of small, scented flowers in white or pink. It's one of those moments in the garden that genuinely stops people in their tracks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNative to the mountains of Asia from the Himalayas to China - montana means mountain - it's fully hardy, tolerant of a wide range of conditions, and requires almost no intervention once established. Unlike most clematis, it doesn't need regular pruning to perform; just let it get on with things and it will cover a wall, fence, arch, or tree with minimum fuss.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne pruning note: montana flowers on the previous season's growth. If you do need to cut it back, do so immediately after flowering - not before - or you'll lose next year's display.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGrow in sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Keep the roots cool and shaded - cover the base with other plants or a layer of pebbles. Plant with the crown a few centimetres below the soil surface to encourage strong growth.
