Native to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, the Fatsia Japonica can be grown both outside and as a houseplant. It’s a very popular plant due to its attractive foliage and few care needs – even gardening royalty, Alan Titchmarsh, is said to be a fan. It can produce small, white flowers in the autumn and these are usually followed by black fruits, too.

This plant has eight leaf lobes, which is where it gets its name 'fatsia' from, the Japanese word meaning 'eight'.

The Fatsia Japonica is pretty low maintenance with its care needs, it just may need some protection from the elements during the winter months, so consider providing it with shelter. It also has a tendency to grow wide and can reach a spread of around 3-4 metres at maturity, so make sure you give it plenty of room. If you have pets, you'll be pleased to know this plant is non-toxic.

Jo's Top Tip

Getting chilly out there? Keep an eye on your Fatsia Japonica as cold weather can cause the leaves to drop or even turn black. If they do turn black, resist the urge to prune as they should change back to green when the warmer weather returns.

In short, if anything isn't right with your order we'll sort it.

Your plants have not only been packaged by humans (we’d like to find a robot that could beat our packaging skills) but by our in-house team of plant lovers who have lovingly prepared your order.

If you’re not happy with your plants, let us know within 30 days, by contacting us via live chat, email or phone and a friendly member of our team will do their absolute best to rectify anything that's gone wrong.

It's not just the plants that we care about though, we're pretty proud of our market leading (sustainable) packaging too. We’ve created a family of transport boxes with handles and where possible use our 'anti-roll' device which prevents the plant from travelling around should the box be inadvertently tipped upside down during transit.

Things occasionally go wrong, but we'd like to assure you we're on hand help!
