With pretty coloured flowers and an unusual ruffle-shaped petal, the Iris Germanica is a great option for all garden styles, from balconies to lawns. All types of Iris take their name from the Greek word meaning 'rainbow' - very fitting as the Bearded Iris comes in a variety of shades. And in case you were wondering about the bearded part of this plant's name - it's the fuzzy row of hairs near the base of each petal.
The Iris Germanica ticks all the boxes, not only growing well in flowerbeds and patio pots alike, but its fragrant blooms make fantastic cut flowers for you to enjoy inside, too.
Expect to see this plant flower from May to June. It will grow best in sunny spots and with well-drained soil. The Iris Germanica is also loved by pollinators, so expect to see butterflies and bees in your garden where this is planted.

Jo's Top Tip
If you're planting the Iris Germanica straight into a flowerbed, it should be the only plant in that bed as it doesn't like to be crowded with other plants. Less competition for sunlight will also encourage flowering.
