Japanese Maple 'Shaina' - Acer palmatum 'Shaina'
'Shaina' is a compact, upright Japanese maple - one of the few in the palmatum family that grows up rather than out. The leaves are a rich red-purple through spring and summer, deepening as the season progresses and putting on a vivid final show in autumn before dropping. The tidy, rounded habit makes it particularly well suited to containers and smaller spaces where a spreading cascade wouldn't work.
Native to Japan and East Asia, Japanese maples have been cultivated for centuries. 'Shaina' is slower-growing than many and stays compact, which is one of the reasons it works so well as a long-term container plant. It looks good with very little intervention.
Grow in a sheltered spot away from cold winds and late frosts, which can scorch the emerging spring leaves. Partial shade or dappled sun is ideal - direct afternoon sun can fade the colour in summer. Use ericaceous or humus-rich, well-drained compost. Water regularly through summer with rainwater where possible. Prune only when fully dormant if reshaping is needed.
