English Ivy - Hedera helix
With classic ivy-shaped leaves, it's hard to resist this timeless, climbing, evergreen shrub. Hardy and easy to care for, mature plants may grow small, yellow-green flowers in autumn followed by black berries - a useful food source for birds.
The word 'helix' in this plant's name translates from Greek to mean 'twist and turn' - a reference to how the vines rotate as they grow. It's estimated that across the different species of ivy, there are nearly 400 cultivars.
Outdoors, ivy is one of the most versatile plants you can grow. It'll scramble up walls, trail from pots and hanging baskets, or spread as ground cover under trees where little else will grow. Give it full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil and it will get on with things without much prompting. Water regularly while it establishes, then ease back - once settled, it's notably drought-tolerant. Trim back as needed to keep it where you want it.
