Lavender - Lavandula angustifolia 'Felice'
If you've ever walked past a lavender in full bloom and stopped without meaning to, you'll understand why this plant keeps appearing in gardens. 'Felice' is an English lavender - the classic, upright type - with long stems carrying soft, blush-pink flower spikes above neat, silver-grey foliage. The scent is the traditional lavender fragrance most people have in mind when they think of the plant: clean, warm, and unmistakeable.
Native to the Mediterranean, English lavender is fully hardy across the UK, drought-tolerant once established, and deeply popular with bees and other pollinators from the moment the flowers open.
Grow in full sun in well-drained soil - lavender struggles in wet or heavy ground. Trim back by about a third after flowering to keep the plant compact and prevent it becoming woody over time. Don't cut back into old wood. Feed sparingly - lean, dry conditions suit it better than rich soil.
