Fig Tree - Ficus carica 'Little Miss Figgy'
All the character of a fig tree - the bold, deeply lobed leaves, the actual fruit, the unhurried Mediterranean quality - in a compact plant bred specifically for containers and smaller spaces. 'Little Miss Figgy' stays around 1 metre tall, which means you can grow it on a patio or terrace without needing a half-barrel-sized pot and the structural engineering to go with it. It's a genuinely useful variety for anyone who wants a fig but doesn't have a south-facing wall or a large garden to work with.
Native to Syria and Persia and grown in Britain since Roman times, figs do best in warmth and sunshine. Being in a container already does half the work for you - figs fruit better when their roots are somewhat restricted, which container growing naturally achieves.
This plant is also known as the Common Fig.
Grow in full sun in well-drained compost in a sheltered position. Water regularly through the growing season. Feed with a high-potassium fertiliser monthly from spring through summer. In winter, move to a frost-free spot or protect well - container figs are more vulnerable than those planted in the ground. Note: the sap can irritate the skin - wear gloves when pruning.
Decorative pot not included.
