Golden Barrel Cactus - Echinocactus grusonii
This is the Golden Barrel at its most impressive. Already well on its way to a full, mature form, its globe is wrapped in bold golden spines that radiate outwards in perfect symmetry, glowing warmly in direct sunlight. It's the kind of plant that earns its spot in the room and keeps it.
Native to central Mexico and now endangered in the wild, Echinocactus grusonii is one of the most celebrated cacti in cultivation. At this size, you're getting a head start on that characteristic rounded barrel shape, and with the right care it'll continue to grow, slowly and steadily, for many years to come.
This plant is also known as the Mother-in-Law's Cushion and Golden Ball Cactus.
Position in the sunniest spot in your home. Direct sun will keep those golden spines at their best. Water every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer, letting the compost dry out completely each time. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and winter.
