Star Jasmine - Trachelospermum jasminoides
Despite its name, star jasmine isn't actually a jasmine - but it has all the fragrance you'd associate with one, and more. In summer, small, pinwheel-shaped white flowers appear across the dark evergreen foliage and the scent, particularly in the evening, is remarkable. It's one of the most rewarding climbers for a sheltered garden wall or fence, and fully evergreen so it works hard all year round.
Native to China and Japan, Trachelospermum jasminoides is hardy to around -10°C in a sheltered spot. The foliage takes on rich bronze and red tones in cooler weather, giving a different kind of interest through autumn and winter. It's self-twining, so will attach itself to a trellis or wires, and can also be grown as ground cover or in a large container.
This plant is also known as Confederate Jasmine.
Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Shelter from cold, drying winds. Water freely through the growing season and feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser. In winter, water sparingly. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape.
