Sweet Cherry Tree - Prunus avium 'Regina'
The sweet cherry earns its place in the garden twice over. In spring it puts on a proper blossom display - clusters of white flowers covering the bare branches before the leaves appear, a reliable favourite with pollinators. Then in early summer comes the fruit: 'Regina' produces large, dark red, exceptionally sweet cherries that are among the best-flavoured varieties you can grow. A net over the ripening fruit isn't a bad idea if you want any before the birds get there.
'Regina' is a late-cropping variety, which means the fruit ripens towards the end of summer - useful for extending the cherry season beyond earlier varieties. Fully hardy across the UK and naturally vigorous, it can be kept to a manageable size with annual pruning. The foliage turns warm shades of orange and red in autumn for an extra season of interest.
Grow in full sun in well-drained soil. Prune in summer rather than winter to reduce the risk of disease entering the cuts - this is particularly important with cherries. Water well while establishing. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser suited to fruit trees.
