Your Spring Guide To Thriving Houseplants

Your Spring Guide To Thriving Houseplants

Spring has officially sprung. The days are longer, the radiators are (finally) off, and your houseplants are waking up from their winter sleep. While we’re all dreaming of pub gardens and ditching our coats, our plants are dreaming of growth. But they’ll need a little help!

Whether you’ve got a jungle’s worth of houseplants or you’re a new plant collector, here are a few easy ways to keep your gang thriving all spring long. No green thumb required - just a bit of water, light, and love (plus the occasional pep talk).

check your watering schedule

As the weather warms up, your houseplants will start drinking more. Check the top 2 inches of soil – if it’s dry, it’s time for a top-up. The trick is to water thoroughly, but not excessively. When you water, do it slowly and evenly until you see a little water draining out of the bottom of the pot – this means the roots are getting what they need.

TOP TIP: If you’re watering your houseplant in its decorative pot, always tip away any excess water coming out of the drainage holes. Sitting in water is a one-way ticket to root rot, and that’s your plant’s fast track to a soggy, sorry end. And no one wants that!

feed them

After a sleepy winter, your houseplants are waking up hungry and ready to grow, so give them what they need to thrive - a balanced fertiliser. We recommend Houseplant Focus. It gives your plants the fuel they need to grow well and look their best. Just be sure to follow the dilution instructions, as overfeeding can be just as bad as neglect. Little and often is the way to go!

give them a new home

Spring is the best time to upgrade your houseplant's nursery pot. If you spot roots curling around the surface or peeking out of the drainage holes, your plant is feeling a little cramped and would appreciate being repotted.

TOP TIP: Opt for a pot that is 2-3 inches bigger than the last - anything too roomy and your plant won’t like it. It’s like wearing shoes that are three sizes too big. Wobbly, weird, and definitely not comfortable.

a little humidity goes a long way

Some air-purifying plants, such as the Peace Lily and Boston Fern, prefer things on the humid side. Regular misting, grouping plants together to increase humidity, or investing in a humidifier can make all the difference.

TOP TIP: Placing a tray of water near your plant can also help raise humidity – think of it as their personal spa steam room.

propagate and share

Spring’s the perfect time to propagate your plants, they’re in growth mode and ready to multiply. Snip a healthy stem below a node, pop it in water, and give it a sunny windowsill. In a few weeks, you'll have roots starting to grow and shortly after, a whole new plant baby to pot up or gift on!

TOP TIP: Snake Plants, Spider Plants and the Swiss Cheese Plant are among the easiest indoor houseplants to propagate.

That’s your spring checklist sorted. A few tweaks here, a little extra care there, and your houseplants will be thriving. Whether you're misting, feeding, or finally upgrading that tight-fitting nursery pot, these small steps will set your indoor jungle up for the spring season!
