The industry measures plants from base of the pot to the tip of the tallest leaf, held straight upright. This is the height listed on our site. Once your plant settles in and relaxes, it may sit a little lower. No two plants are the same, so some variation is natural.
| Nursery Pot Size | Decorative Pot Size |
|---|---|
| 12cm | 13 - 14cm |
| 14cm | 15 - 17cm |
| 17cm | 18 - 19cm |
| 19cm | 20 - 22cm |
| 21cm | 22 - 24cm |
| 24cm | 25 - 26cm |
| 27cm | 28 - 34cm |
| 35cm | 36 - 45cm |
Outdoor plant pots are usually measured by their capacity in litres, rather than just their width. The litre measurement tells you how much compost the pot can hold, helping you choose the right size for your plant and understand how much growing space the roots will have.
As a guide, the width of a nursery pot generally corresponds to the following capacities:
| Pot Width | Capacity |
|---|---|
| 13cm | 1 litre |
| 14cm | 1 litre |
| 15cm | 1 litre |
| 17cm | 2 litres |
| 18cm | 3 litres |
| 19cm | 3 litres |
| 20cm | 4 litres |
| 22cm | 5 litres |
| 24cm | 6 litres |
| 25cm | 7 litres |
Please note that these measurements are approximate and may vary slightly between growers and pot manufacturers. When shopping for plants, the litre size is often the best indicator of the pot volume and the maturity of the plant.
