Japanese Maple 'Garnet' - Acer palmatum 'Garnet'
The name says it all. 'Garnet' produces deeply cut, seven-lobed leaves in a rich brownish-red that holds its colour well through summer before brightening in autumn to vivid crimson and orange. The growth habit is naturally cascading - branches sweep downwards in a way that looks considered without needing any training. One of the most reliable and widely loved Japanese maples.
Native to Japan, Korea, and China, Japanese maples have been refined by horticulturalists for centuries. 'Garnet' is a dissectum type - the finely cut foliage type - and is notably more vigorous than many in this group. Slow-growing overall, but a rewarding long-term garden plant that looks better with every passing year.
Grow in a sheltered spot away from cold, drying winds and late frosts, which can scorch the emerging leaves in spring. Partial shade or dappled light is ideal, though full sun is tolerated if soil stays reliably moist. Use ericaceous or humus-rich, well-drained compost. Water regularly in summer with rainwater where possible - never let it dry out completely. Prune only if needed, when the plant is fully dormant.
Decorative pot not included.
