Japanese Maple 'Ryusen' - Acer palmatum 'Ryusen'
'Ryusen' does something unusual among weeping Japanese maples. Most cascade types have finely cut, lacy foliage - 'Ryusen' has full, palmate leaves, the kind more commonly seen on upright varieties, but on stiffly weeping branches that fall almost vertically downwards. The result is a tree with real presence and an elegantly unusual silhouette. Bright green through spring and summer, it turns brilliant gold, orange, and red in autumn.
A small, slow-growing tree described by horticulturalists as reaching around 2m tall and 1m across, 'Ryusen' suits smaller gardens, containers, and sheltered urban spots particularly well. The central leader can be trained to adjust height, giving you some control over how the final shape develops.
Grow in a sheltered position away from cold winds and late frosts. Partial shade or dappled sun is ideal. Use ericaceous or humus-rich, well-drained compost, and mulch around the base in autumn to protect the shallow roots. Water regularly in summer - rainwater is preferable to tap water. Prune only when fully dormant.
