White Anthurium in Glass

The White Champion is one of the prettiest flowering houseplants you can own. The spathes are a cool, pure white with the faintest green tint at the base - and unlike many flowering plants, it blooms repeatedly through the year. This one arrives already planted in a glass vase using a hydroponic growing method, which makes care considerably more straightforward than you might expect.

In the wild, Anthuriums grow as epiphytes in the Colombian and Ecuadorian rainforest - clinging to the branches of larger trees, their roots trailing in humid air and drinking directly from rainfall as it runs down through the canopy. The glass vessel recreates exactly that: roots in water, no soil needed, and the plant doing what it has always done.

Keep the water level topped up and change it every two to three weeks to keep it fresh. In spring and summer, add a small amount of diluted liquid plant food to the water, leave it for around 24 hours, then refresh with clean water. Keep the very tops of the root ball just above the waterline rather than fully submerged, and that is genuinely all there is to it.

In the wild, Anthuriums grow in the rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador, tucked beneath the forest canopy. That means bright, indirect light suits them best - a spot near a window that doesn't catch direct sun. They appreciate warmth and humidity and will protest if the temperature drops below 15°C, so keep them away from cold draughts and unheated rooms in winter.

Anthurium sap contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause irritation and discomfort if chewed or ingested. Not suitable for households with curious pets or young children who may nibble.
