Blackberry - Rubus fruticosus
Growing your own blackberries is one of the more rewarding things you can do in a garden. The canes produce generous crops of fruit in late summer, the flowers are a hit with pollinators, and the plant asks very little once it's established. There's also something to be said for eating a blackberry straight off the plant rather than out of a plastic punnet.
Native to Europe and western Asia, the blackberry is fully hardy and will grow in most UK gardens without complaint. It's a climber and scrambler by nature, so it benefits from a frame, fence, or trellis to grow against. Canes fruit in their second year - the first year is for establishing, the second is when the harvest comes.
Grow in sun or partial shade in any reasonable, well-drained soil. Train the new canes against a support as they grow. After fruiting, cut the spent canes down to the base and train in the new canes that will carry next year's crop. Water regularly through the fruiting season. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser.
As it’s early in the growing season, your plant may arrive a little less developed than pictured - but with the right care, it’ll soon flourish into its full, leafy self.
Decorative pot not included.
