Byzantine Gladiolus - Gladiolus communis subsp. byzantinus
A hardy gladiolus in vivid magenta, far more slender than the large-flowered types sold for cutting. It needs no lifting over winter in most of the UK, which sets it apart from its relatives. Left alone it spreads on its own and comes back each year, working its way through a border.
Plant in groups of 10–20, around 10cm apart, where the flower spikes can come up through neighbouring plants. Best in the ground, though a deep pot also works.
Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten.
