A little about this plant

European Fan Palm - Chamaerops humilis
Despite what the name might suggest, you don't need to be in the south of France to grow this palm well. The European Fan Palm is the only palm native to Europe and it's genuinely at home in UK gardens - hardier than it looks, tolerant of wind, and even a degree of shade. That combination is rarer than you'd think in an ornamental palm.

Native to the western Mediterranean, including Spain, Morocco, and southern Italy, Chamaerops humilis grows slowly into a multi-stemmed clump of fan-shaped, blue-green leaves on spiny stems.

This plant is also known as the Dwarf Fan Palm and the Mediterranean Fan Palm.

Hardy to around -12°C once established, though younger plants benefit from a little fleece protection in their first winters. Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Water moderately through the growing season and feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser. In containers, it's particularly happy as long as it doesn't sit in waterlogged compost.

Decorative pot not included.

outdoor plant FAQs

How long should I wait until repotting my outdoor plant?

Your outdoor plant will be happiest planted into the garden as soon as possible after it arrives, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for planting, but with a little extra watering, many outdoor plants can also be planted successfully during summer.

How often should I water it?

Water well after planting, then continue watering regularly for the first few weeks while the roots establish.

Will the plant surive all year round outside?

Most outdoor plants are chosen to grow outside and can happily stay outdoors all year round. However, this does depend on the specific plant variety and the conditions in your garden.
