Clematis Montana - Clematis montana
Clematis montana is the one to choose if you want to cover something properly. It's the most vigorous of all the climbing clematis and in late spring it does something spectacular - every stem disappears under a mass of small, scented flowers in white or pink. It's one of those moments in the garden that genuinely stops people in their tracks.
Native to the mountains of Asia from the Himalayas to China - montana means mountain - it's fully hardy, tolerant of a wide range of conditions, and requires almost no intervention once established. Unlike most clematis, it doesn't need regular pruning to perform; just let it get on with things and it will cover a wall, fence, arch, or tree with minimum fuss.
One pruning note: montana flowers on the previous season's growth. If you do need to cut it back, do so immediately after flowering - not before - or you'll lose next year's display.
Grow in sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Keep the roots cool and shaded - cover the base with other plants or a layer of pebbles. Plant with the crown a few centimetres below the soil surface to encourage strong growth. Provide a support for it to climb.
As it’s early in the growing season, your plant may arrive a little less developed than pictured - but with the right care, it’ll soon flourish into its full, leafy self.
