Campbell Bamboo - Fargesia robusta 'Campbell'
If you're looking for screening that actually looks good, this is the one. Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' grows in a tight, upright clump with olive-green canes and dark leaves - and crucially, it doesn't spread. It's one of a small number of bamboos that can be planted without any anxiety about it taking over the garden. Fully evergreen, fully hardy, and genuinely useful.
Native to Sichuan province in China - and, worth knowing, one of the food sources for giant pandas. In UK gardens it reaches around 3-4 metres at maturity, though it can be kept shorter with selective pruning. New shoots emerge in spring with pale cream sheaths that contrast with the green canes before dropping in early summer, giving a two-tone effect through the season.
This plant is also known as Umbrella Bamboo.
Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. More sun-tolerant than most Fargesias. Water well during dry spells - bamboo has a high water requirement. Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser each spring. Avoid exposed, windy positions as the leaves can become ragged. Hardy throughout the UK.
As it’s early in the growing season, your plant may arrive a little less developed than pictured - but with the right care, it’ll soon flourish into its full, leafy self.
Decorative pot not included.
Plant height is measured from the base of the nursery pot to the tip of the tallest leaf when held upright.
