£7.20Golden Barrel Cactus - Echinocactus grusonii
Perfectly round, densely spined and deeply satisfying to look at. The Golden Barrel is a design classic of the cactus world, its globe-shaped body covered in neat, evenly-spaced ribs lined with bright golden-yellow spines that catch the light from every angle. Slow-growing and long-lived, this is a plant you'll have for years.
Native to central Mexico, Echinocactus grusonii is sadly endangered in the wild, which makes every cultivated plant a small act of conservation. Young plants like this one are perfectly happy on a bright windowsill and will reward a little patience with steady, satisfying growth over time.
This plant is also known as the Mother-in-Law's Cushion and Golden Ball Cactus.
Give it the brightest, sunniest position you have. Water every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer, making sure the soil is completely dry before watering again. In winter, water very sparingly or not at all. Try to avoid getting water on the crown of the plant.
