Hydrangea anomala petiolaris (Climbing Hydrangea) - Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris
The Hydrangea anomala petiolaris is one of the most useful climbing plants for a shaded wall, and one of the few climbers that actually does well on a north-facing aspect. It's self-clinging - no wires, no trellis needed - and attaches itself as it grows. The climbing hydrangea produces flat, white lacecap flowers in early summer, and once the leaves drop in autumn the peeling, reddish-brown bark gives the structure real character through winter. Slow to establish in the first couple of years, but very long-lived once it's away.
