Olive Tree - Olea europaea
Few plants carry quite so much quiet history. The olive tree has been grown around the Mediterranean for thousands of years, and it's easy to see why - silvery-green foliage that shimmers in sunlight, a naturally confident form, and a patient, unhurried character that rewards good placement. In a sheltered sunny spot, a well-established olive becomes one of the most unfussy plants you can own.
Native to the Mediterranean basin, olives are evergreen and drought-tolerant once settled in. The key is sun, sharp drainage, and shelter from bitter east winds. In colder regions, growing in a large container lets you move it undercover if hard frosts threaten below -10°C.
This plant is also known as the European Olive and the Common Olive.
Give it the sunniest spot you have, ideally south or west-facing. Natural leaf shed in spring is normal and nothing to worry about. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer.

Your outdoor plant will be happiest planted into the garden as soon as possible after it arrives, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for planting, but with a little extra watering, many outdoor plants can also be planted successfully during summer.
Water well after planting, then continue watering regularly for the first few weeks while the roots establish.
Most outdoor plants are chosen to grow outside and can happily stay outdoors all year round. However, this does depend on the specific plant variety and the conditions in your garden.
