Lemon Tree - Citrus limon
There's something genuinely satisfying about growing your own lemons. The white blossom is fragrant, the foliage smells wonderful when brushed, and if conditions are right, you'll get actual fruit - lemons you can slice into a gin and tonic or squeeze over pasta. It takes a bit more attention than most plants, but it's absolutely worth it.
Native to South Asia and long cultivated across the Mediterranean, lemon trees thrive in warmth, sun, and humidity. In the UK they spend summer outdoors in a sheltered, sunny spot and come indoors to a cool, bright room or unheated conservatory from late autumn until the risk of frost has passed - usually May or June depending on your area. They're not frost-hardy, so this annual move is non-negotiable.
One thing worth knowing: fruit and flowers may sometimes drop during the transition between indoors and outdoors. Don't panic - this is a normal reaction to the change in conditions. New growth follows and the plant will fruit again.
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry - in summer this may be weekly, in winter far less. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline. Feed with a specialist citrus fertiliser through spring and summer, switching to a winter citrus formula from October. Use a well-draining compost.
Decorative pot not included.
Plant height is measured from the base of the nursery pot to the tip of the tallest leaf when held upright.
