Magnolia Tree - Magnolia
Magnolia is one of those plants that makes people stop and look. For a few weeks in spring, before the leaves even appear, the bare branches fill with large, cup-shaped flowers in shades of white, cream, or blush pink - and the effect is genuinely hard to beat. It's one of the oldest flowering plants on earth, and it's been earning its place in gardens ever since.
Fully hardy in UK gardens, magnolias are slow-growing and long-lived - this is a plant you're planting for keeps. They prefer a sheltered spot out of cold winds and, crucially, away from early morning sun on frosty days - a late frost hitting open flowers can brown the petals, which looks dramatic but doesn't actually harm the plant. New flowers will follow.
Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained, soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions. Water well while establishing and feed in spring with a fertiliser suited to acid-loving plants. Magnolias don't need regular pruning - if you do need to shape one, do it in midsummer rather than winter to reduce the risk of disease entering cuts.
As it’s early in the growing season, your plant may arrive a little less developed than pictured - but with the right care, it’ll soon flourish into its full, leafy self.

Nothing makes us happier than making you happy which is why we do everything we can to provide a positive plant experience from start to finish. Your plant should arrive fresh and healthy - if for any reason it doesn’t, we’ll replace it for free within 30 days! Find out more here.
Your outdoor plant will be happiest planted into the garden as soon as possible after it arrives, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for planting, but with a little extra watering, many outdoor plants can also be planted successfully during summer.
Water well after planting, then continue watering regularly for the first few weeks while the roots establish.
Most outdoor plants are chosen to grow outside and can happily stay outdoors all year round. However, this does depend on the specific plant variety and the conditions in your garden.
