Swiss Cheese Vine - Monstera adansonii
The Swiss Cheese Vine is a fast-growing tropical climber with a lot going on. The leaves are heavily perforated with oval holes - a natural adaptation that helps the plant cope with the heavy rainfall and strong winds of its native Central and South American rainforests by letting them pass straight through. In a glass vase like this one, with its root system suspended in water and clearly visible, it makes a genuinely interesting display.
Growing hydroponically - roots in water rather than soil - suits the adansonii well. In its natural habitat it absorbs moisture directly through its roots from humid air and damp surfaces. Keep the water level consistent, change it every two to three weeks, and in spring and summer add a diluted liquid plant food to the water and leave it for 24 hours before refreshing. Outside of the growing season, plain water is all it needs.
Bright, indirect light is the sweet spot. Direct sun will bleach the leaves. It thrives with warmth and humidity - a light-filled bathroom or kitchen works particularly well. In good conditions it grows quickly and will eventually want something to trail or climb against.
Monstera adansonii is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing oral irritation and digestive discomfort. Keep out of reach of pets.
The glass vase is included.
