A little about this plant

Dwarf Banana - Musa acuminata 'Dwarf Cavendish'
Nothing transforms a sunny spot quite like a banana plant. The huge, paddle-shaped leaves bring an instant tropical quality that very few other plants can match, and 'Dwarf Cavendish' is compact enough to manage in a large container on a patio or terrace through summer. It's the same variety grown commercially for fruit - though in the UK, it's the foliage rather than the fruit that's the main event.

Native to South and Southeast Asia, banana plants are frost-tender and need bringing indoors before temperatures drop in autumn - to a bright, cool room, conservatory, or greenhouse. In summer, they put on a remarkable amount of growth with good sun and regular feeding. The leaves may tear in the wind - this is completely normal and doesn't affect the plant's health.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil or compost. Water freely through the growing season, reducing significantly in winter. Feed with a high-nitrogen fertiliser through spring and summer to fuel the leaf growth. Move indoors before the first cold nights of autumn.

outdoor plant FAQs

How long should I wait until repotting my outdoor plant?

Your outdoor plant will be happiest planted into the garden as soon as possible after it arrives, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for planting, but with a little extra watering, many outdoor plants can also be planted successfully during summer.

How often should I water it?

Water well after planting, then continue watering regularly for the first few weeks while the roots establish.

Will the plant surive all year round outside?

Most outdoor plants are chosen to grow outside and can happily stay outdoors all year round. However, this does depend on the specific plant variety and the conditions in your garden.
