Oxalis - Oxalis triangularis
If you're after a plant that feels a little more unusual but is still wonderfully easy to live with, the Oxalis triangularis is a standout from the start. With its deep purple, butterfly-like leaves and delicate, starry blooms, it brings a sense of movement to a space while remaining refreshingly low-maintenance.
Its triangular leaves open and close in response to light, gently shifting throughout the day. By evening they fold inwards, then reopen with the morning light - a subtle, mesmerising habit that never really loses its charm. Soft stems lift clusters of pale pink or white flowers above the foliage, adding a lightness that balances its rich tones.
Native to South America, Oxalis is naturally resilient and easygoing. Outdoors it does best in a sheltered spot with partial shade - direct sun can fade the deep purple colour and scorch the leaves. It's not fully frost-hardy, so bring it in before temperatures drop in autumn and treat it as a houseplant through the colder months. Water when the top layer of soil has dried out, and feed monthly through the growing season.

Your outdoor plant will be happiest planted into the garden as soon as possible after it arrives, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for planting, but with a little extra watering, many outdoor plants can also be planted successfully during summer.
Water well after planting, then continue watering regularly for the first few weeks while the roots establish.
Most outdoor plants are chosen to grow outside and can happily stay outdoors all year round. However, this does depend on the specific plant variety and the conditions in your garden.
