You don't need to be in Tenerife to have a garden that feels like it. You just need the right plants. These three will transform any patio, terrace or courtyard into somewhere that makes people stop and do a double take - all sweeping fronds, bold silhouettes and the kind of lush, generous foliage that makes everything feel a little more like a holiday.
The windmill palm sets the scene - tall, elegant and hardy enough to stay outside all year round, which surprises people every single time we tell them. The Chamaerops humilis brings a completely different energy alongside it: lower, bushier and undeniably exotic. And then there's the dwarf banana. Those enormous paddle leaves have a quality to them that nothing else in British gardening comes close to matching.
The windmill palm is fully hardy and stays outside year-round. The dwarf banana needs bringing in before temperatures drop in autumn - think of it as a houseguest who spends summer in the garden and winters indoors.

Your outdoor plant will be happiest planted into the garden as soon as possible after it arrives, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for planting, but with a little extra watering, many outdoor plants can also be planted successfully during summer.
Water well after planting, then continue watering regularly for the first few weeks while the roots establish.
Most outdoor plants are chosen to grow outside and can happily stay outdoors all year round. However, this does depend on the specific plant variety and the conditions in your garden.
