This cactus is native to Northern Mexico and Arizona’s desert regions. It has flat wide stems that bear prickles. In the wild they will produce an edible fruit called tunas. With the right care, prickly pear can produce brightly coloured flowers at the top of the stems.
Light conditions: position in bright light.
Neediness: Easy to care for but remember that your cactus needs dusting to unblock its pores, helping it to breathe. Try a make-up brush or an artist’s brush to remove cobwebs and dust
Watering: a prickly pear requires very little watering to keep it happy. You can expect to water every two to three weeks during warmer or when the soil has completely dried out. Your cactus will not need watering during the winter months.
Ideal location: bedrooms, living rooms and studies
Rate of growth: slow growing
Temperature: keep at a normal room temperature
Pets: this plant is non-toxic to pets but beware of the spikes!
